I recently had the pleasure of embarking on Explora 1, the flagship of Explora Journeys’ new fleet. This seven-night sailing, departing from Venice on August 9, 2024, and concluding in Athens, promised a luxurious and immersive experience—and it delivered in every way. From the spacious Ocean Terrace Suite to exceptional dining and a focus on wellness, Explora 1 set a new standard for luxury cruising. Here’s a detailed look at my unforgettable time aboard.

First Impressions
Stepping aboard Explora 1 felt like entering a world of refined elegance. Boarding in Fusina -in Venice was smooth but long. with check in occuring close to Venice, then being transferred to Fusina, and water transfer to the ship.
The check in process was super fast with a leather bound key card holder issued, and then we had our first chance to soak it all in. What a stunning ship! The ambience was more akin to checking into a five-star boutique hotel than embarking on a traditional cruise. The staff welcomed us with warmth, and a crafted cocktail to cool us down at the popular Lobby Bar.
The design of Explora 1 is undeniably chic—contemporary, minimalist, and effortlessly luxurious. Every corner exudes sophistication, from the grand lobby to the intimate lounges. The ship's neutral colour palette, natural materials, and floor-to-ceiling windows allowed the beauty of the surrounding sea to shine. Its sleek lines and understated opulence are clear nods to modern European luxury, creating a serene atmosphere for relaxation.

Accommodation: Ocean Terrace Suite
My Ocean Terrace Suite was a sanctuary at sea. Spacious and filled with natural light, the suite boasted floor-to-ceiling windows that opened onto a large private terrace—my favourite spot for enjoying the views.
The suite featured a king-size bed adorned with soft linens, a comfortable living area with contemporary furnishings, and a walk-in wardrobe that added an extra touch of grandeur.
The marble-clad bathroom was pure indulgence, offering both a rainfall shower and a soaking tub, stocked with luxurious bath amenities. A thoughtful touch was the personalised mini-bar, customised to my preferences, and the on-demand tablet for ordering room service or exploring the ship’s offerings. Every detail, from the plush robes to the high-end toiletries, ensured an experience of pure comfort.

Dining: A World of Culinary Delights
Explora 1 takes pride in its culinary offerings, with six unique restaurants onboard, each promising an extraordinary dining experience.
Anthology: This restaurant was an unforgettable culinary journey, featuring rotating guest chefs and innovative global cuisine. I savored a spectacular multi-course meal with dishes like foie gras, Wagyu beef, and a decadent chocolate dessert, all paired with expertly selected wines.
Sakura: A must-visit for lovers of Japanese cuisine, Sakura served beautifully crafted sushi and sashimi, along with exquisite dishes from the robatayaki grill. The delicate flavors and presentation were on par with some of the best Japanese restaurants I’ve experienced.

Marble & Co. Grill: A steakhouse with a refined touch, Marble & Co. focused on high-quality cuts of meat, cooked to perfection. The sommelier’s wine recommendations elevated the experience, making this a go-to for meat lovers.

Mediterranean Yacht Club: This restaurant celebrated the flavors of the Mediterranean, with dishes inspired by the regions we sailed through. From fresh pasta to grilled seafood, everything was perfectly seasoned and sourced locally.
Fil Rouge: An intimate venue serving French-inspired cuisine, Fil Rouge felt like a hidden gem. I enjoyed a beautiful meal of seared scallops, followed by duck confit, all served with impeccable attention to detail.
Emporium Marketplace: The more casual Emporium Marketplace was ideal for breakfast and lunch, offering a wide array of global dishes. I particularly enjoyed the fresh seafood and the variety of international cuisine available daily.

Onboard Experience: Activities, Facilities, and Service
Explora 1 offers a wealth of amenities, ensuring that guests can choose from a variety of activities to enrich their cruise experience.
Pools: The ship’s four pools each had a unique appeal. The top-deck main pool was a lively hub for socializing and sunbathing, while the aft infinity pool, with its breathtaking ocean views, was perfect for relaxation. For a more private experience, the serene indoor pool near the spa provided a tranquil escape.

Ocean Wellness Spa Program: The Ocean Wellness spa was a true highlight. Focused on holistic well-being, the program offered a range of treatments inspired by the sea. I indulged in a seaweed wrap and a deep-tissue massage, both of which were rejuvenating. The spa’s thermal suite, which included steam rooms, saunas, and hydrotherapy pools, provided a sanctuary for complete relaxation.
Service: The service onboard was flawless. Every member of the crew went out of their way to ensure a seamless and personalized experience. Whether poolside, at dinner, or simply passing by in the corridors, the staff were attentive, friendly, and highly professional.
Entertainment and Enrichment: While Explora 1 leans toward a more refined atmosphere rather than extravagant nightlife, there was plenty to enjoy. Live jazz performances and intimate piano recitals set the tone for sophisticated evenings. The ship’s enrichment program included wine tastings, cooking demonstrations, and insightful lectures on the destinations we were visiting.

Ports of Call: Venice to Athens
The itinerary was as impressive as the onboard experience, featuring some of the Mediterranean’s most beautiful and culturally rich destinations.
Venice, Italy: We departed from the romantic canals of Venice, with its historic architecture and timeless charm. Boarding in this iconic city added to the allure of the journey ahead.
Hvar, Croatia: Our first stop was the sun-soaked island of Hvar. Known for its lavender fields and crystal-clear waters, Hvar is a blend of historic beauty and natural wonder. I spent the day exploring the charming old town and enjoying a leisurely lunch by the marina.
Kotor, Montenegro: Nestled between dramatic mountains and a stunning bay, Kotor is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. I wandered through its medieval streets, explored ancient churches, and climbed the fortress walls for a panoramic view of the bay—a must-do for adventurous travellers.
Brindisi, Italy: This port town in southern Italy was a pleasant surprise. Known for its rich history and as a gateway to ancient Rome, I visited the Roman column marking the end of the Appian Way and enjoyed local Apulian cuisine, including the region’s famed orecchiette pasta.
Nydri, Greece: Located on the island of Lefkada, Nydri is known for its picturesque bays and nearby waterfalls. I opted for a private boat tour, which took me around the smaller islands, offering some of the most serene and beautiful scenery of the entire cruise.
Athens, Greece: Our final destination was the ancient city of Athens. Disembarking was smooth, and I spent the afternoon exploring the Acropolis and soaking in the history of one of the world’s most iconic cities. It was a fitting end to an extraordinary journey.
Explora 1 has redefined luxury cruising with its sophisticated design, unparalleled service, and dedication to well-being. From the carefully curated dining experiences to the immersive wellness offerings and thoughtfully designed itineraries, every aspect of this journey from Venice to Athens felt like a celebration of luxury travel.
Whether you're a seasoned cruiser or new to the world of ocean voyages, Explora 1 offers a truly memorable experience, one that lingers long after the final port of call.
